For a story to come to life on stage, for emotion to be shared, sometimes all it takes is to look the audience in the eyes, say a single line, and draw a gesture in space. Olivier Letellier tells stories through words, movement, and everyday objects used as symbols. By combining this hybrid language with other forms of expression circus, dance, sound design, visual arts—he aims to create images that go beyond words. He draws those words from contemporary writing—whether theatrical or literary—to reflect with authors on what it means to « grow up » throughout life. And because there is no age limit for learning from experience, hearing truths, or daring to be oneself, the storytelling theatre he creates speaks to the childhood within each of us, and to young audiences discovering what it means to be a spectator. These are « active » audiences, invited to imagine, engage, participate, and create with us—because, above all, he believes in « doing things together. ».
This is what Olivier Letellier wants to offer participants in these workshops :
- A hands-on approach based on action, experimentation, and collective sharing. An individual and group physical commitment in service of the creative process.
- From warm-ups to text selection, through improvisation, reading, dramaturgical and casting questions, intentions, and directorial choices…
Dedicating oneself to creating for children and young people, and making intergenerational performances, is a political choice—because most of the time, we are facing new spectators. They come from different cultures, religions, and social backgrounds. And yet, there they are, together—feeling the same emotions at the same time, laughing, being afraid, questioning the same things simultaneously. They experience a heightened emotion because it is shared. I stand by the idea of a "young audience" as an audience that does not yet have the “codes” of theatre or the so-called “necessary” references for understanding. Young audiences, in their experience as spectators, are curious and demanding. They allow themselves to be moved by what they receive. Their responses are spontaneous and deeply felt.
