To coincide with the release of his latest feature film, Agora, Taher Chikhaoui will host a filmed meeting, open to the public, with Ala Eddine Slim, one of Tunisia's leading filmmakers. Since Babylon, and even earlier for discerning observers, the name Ala Eddine Slim has been associated with the new generation of Tunisian filmmakers — not only as a director, but also in his capacity as a producer. In the space of just three films, Alaeddine Slim has established himself as a leading figure, or at least as one of the main representatives of the Tunisian film revival. From the start, his films, without exception, have been received at the world's biggest festivals and have won major awards. The aim of the meeting is not only to try to identify the strong points of his aesthetic, which unfortunately has not always been done sufficiently; but we will also try to examine this increasingly terrible paradox: the artistic value of his work is inversely proportional to its local recognition. This is not a new phenomenon, but it seems to be getting worse. Perhaps A. Slim's questioning of cinematic forms of expression gives the impression not only of a radical break with dominant or expected models, but also of a distancing from a tired expectation of (tele)visual schemes. Bringing the fantastic back to the borders of reality, making it almost a contiguous extension of it, and inscribing political discourse not against the image, but entirely against it, is both disturbing and confusing. Our meeting will attempt to measure the extent of this discrepancy and, we hope, to reduce this paradox.
